Probably, each of us has a thing in the wardrobe that we can’t part with. Even if she lost her original appearance, became hopelessly small or large, she can take years in a closet. Pleasant memories, for example, how stunning you looked in it, usually interfere with getting rid of this thing.

Very often, this fate lies in wait for your favorite jeans. To find jeans that will favorably emphasize the merits of the figure, and hide its flaws - a big luck, which happens quite rarely.

If jeans, which until recently sat perfectly, suddenly stopped fastening on you, you can try to increase them by a size or two using methods that have been tested by many generations of fashionistas. Read on how to stretch jeans at home in our article today.

In what places do jeans often sit?

Jeans can become small for two reasons:

  • The first reason is shrinkage after washing.
  • The second reason is more sad - a sharp weight gain. If the numbers on the scales remain the same, but your favorite pants are sitting very tight, most likely they sat down after you washed them incorrectly.

Jeans sit in a variety of areas. Products made of low-quality material with a high percentage of the content of synthetic fibers can “shrink” not in separate places, but completely, or in length or width. Better pants sit down only in sections.Most often - on the belt, which is why it can be difficult for us to fasten jeans after washing.

Another possible problem area is the legs. Tight jeans such as skinny or slim fit, which include stretch, are most susceptible to this. Therefore, when buying tight-fitting trousers, be prepared for the fact that after washing they can become a little short for you.

Proven Methods

There are several ways to stretch jeans at home. We have compiled for you a selection of the simplest and most effective methods.

Before using any of them, first experiment on an inconspicuous area of tissue, since the reaction of the material to such measures cannot be predicted.

Stretching while doing exercises

Denim is a cotton fabric that is not very elastic. However, to make jeans better fit, manufacturers have long learned how to add various synthetic fibers to denim, which can stretch and taper under the influence of various factors.

It is these elastic supplements that are usually to blame for the fact that jeans have decreased in size.

The fabric can be stretched mechanically. It will be most effective to do this directly on yourself. Therefore, we pull jeans on ourselves and proceed to charging.

We work with our feet: we squat, do a swing, sit on a twine, do a bicycle in the air, in general, remember all the leg exercises from school physical education lessons.

At first, shrunken tissue will constrain movement, but soon you will feel freer. Continue until you feel that your jeans are as comfortable as before.

Take a bath with jeans

The fibers will stretch better and stay in shape longer if wetted beforehand. Soaking jeans is also better on yourself.

For this procedure, you need to choose the day when the apartment is warm, and you are not worried about a cold or other inflammatory diseases, otherwise the consequences of such an experiment will be disastrous.

  1. So, we collect a full bath of water (the temperature of the water should be comfortable for the body, but not too warm).
  2. Then we stretch the jeans and plunge into the bath. You need to sit there for 10-15 minutes so that the denim is wet.
  3. Leaving the bath, we proceed to the physical exercises - we do everything in the same way as in the previous method.

Interestingly, the same method can not only increase jeans in size, but also reduce them. We wrote more about this in an article about what to do if jeans are stretched.

We use an expander

In dry cleaners, clothing repair shops and sewing ateliers, a special device is used to stretch trousers in the belt area. In the original, it is called waistband extender, but popularly its name is simply - "extender".

You can buy such a device in one of the companies that sells equipment for the above organizations.

Using a trouser expander is very easy, you can easily master this device:

  1. First, the fabric on the jeans belt needs to be slightly moistened with a spray bottle.
  2. Then fasten the pants on all the fasteners, take the expander and insert it into the belt.
  3. Start to stretch the device gradually until the mark stops at the desired value (starting the process, you need to take measurements from yourself to know how wide the jeans are stretched).
  4. Now, without removing the expander, leave your pants to the fabric completely dry - usually it takes several hours.

Iron and steam

Another good way to stretch denim is to expose it to hot, moist air. An iron or a garment steamer can become a source of such air. This method is especially convenient if you need to stretch jeans in any one place, for example, on a belt or in the lower part of trousers.

The sunken area must be steamed for several minutes.Gradually, the fibers begin to straighten, they will return to their previous elasticity. While the pants are still saturated with warm steam, they need to be put on quickly - let them cool on you already. Walk around in jeans for an hour and a half, so that the new form has time to take hold.

We use a sewing machine

If none of the stretching methods described above helped, then the situation is more serious. The elasticity of the material can no longer be restored, therefore, it is necessary to resort to drastic measures.

To do this, you will have to remember the skills in handling sewing accessories learned from needlework lessons. It is not necessary to be an experienced seamstress, but you need at least a little ability to work on a sewing machine.

Reduce seam allowances

This method will be effective only if the jeans are just a little not suitable for you in size. As a result, you will get an extra centimeter and a half width, but not more.

In addition to the sewing machine, you will need:

  • sewing spreader;
  • scissors;
  • crayon;
  • ruler;
  • needle with thread;
  • and a set of sewing pins.

First, jeans need to be turned inside out, then using a spreader to carefully dissolve the side seams in those places where the pants have become narrow to you. You may have to tear the product along its entire length - it's okay, it just takes a little more time.

Now you need to outline the location of new seams, sweep, and then sew on a sewing machine. Thus, jeans can be increased by half the size.

Insert stripes - easy increase in jeans by 2 sizes!

The most radical, but also the most effective way to increase jeans is to insert stripes in the side seams of the product.

At first glance, it might seem that you can only ruin your pants, but if you do everything carefully and successfully select the material for the inserts, the result will be simply amazing.

The most important thing is to choose the right fabric for stripes. It should not only go well with jeans in color, but also have the appropriate density.

A little material is needed, strips of fabric 50 cm wide are more than enough.

Next, you need to correctly calculate the width of the inserts. First, measure the waist and hips, and determine how many centimeters you need to add to the width of the jeans so that they sit as you need.

Then divide the resulting number by two and add 2 cm to the margin. Now you should cut two flat fabrics of the desired length and width and sew them into the previously opened side seams of the jeans.

Is it possible to stretch in length?

If, as a result of improper washing, the jeans are reduced in length and not in width, you can return the lost centimeters using methods we already know.

Before you start stretching, it is recommended to wet your pants. To make the fabric easier to manipulate, you can rinse the jeans in warm water with air conditioning - it will soften the material and make it more elastic. After that, the pants need to be wrung out, but not very much.

You can stretch jeans in different ways. For example, throw them over the horizontal bar, catch hands on them and hang for as long as you can. Or stretch the pants on the floor, crush them with your knees in the hips and pull the legs up with all their strength.

Tips

When choosing jeans, pay attention to the composition of the fabric from which they are sewn. The higher the cotton content, the lower the risk that after some time the pants will lose their shape.

If the product contains more than 30% elastane or other synthetic material, it is likely that in a couple of washes such trousers will sit down or, conversely, stretch.

Any jeans can shrink: bought in a discount center or purchased in an expensive boutique. Not only the quality of the material of the product, but also compliance with the rules of care plays a role here.

It is best to wash the jeans on your hands or in the washing machine in the delicate wash mode. Do not wash your jeans in hot water or dry them in direct sunlight!
