Plant features
Lavender is considered a universal and unpretentious plant, which very often becomes a decoration in the garden, and can also grow even without human intervention in the wild. Few people know, but in order to enjoy the large-scale beauty and aroma of blooming lavender, you need to go to the Crimea peninsula. Yes, it is there that its huge fields are located.
Previously, tourists who went on vacation had the goal of swimming in the warm sea and getting a good sea tan, but now an integral part of the vacation of almost every vacationer in the Crimea is an excursion to lavender fields. According to statistics, artists often come here for inspiration, newlyweds for beautiful photographs, as well as just nature lovers and connoisseurs of beauty. And, of course, frequent visitors to these lavender fields are lovers of easy money who, without a twinge of conscience, pluck flowers for sale.
A bit of history
Lavender is a low herbaceous plant characterized by small beautiful violet flowers. It is said that during the lush flowering aroma spreads throughout Koktebel, Tarkhankut and Sevastopol. Before talking about where and when to look for lavender in Crimea, let's recall a few historical facts that will help to understand where such plantations came from on the peninsula.
Initially, lavender was grown exclusively on the French and Spanish Mediterranean coasts. Several centuries ago, namely in 1813, it was brought into the Russian Empire and began to grow in the Nikitsky Botanical Garden. The advantage was the narrow-leaved variety. The flower perfectly stuck on the peninsula, because a drought-resistant climate and rocky soil are quite acceptable for it. It is worth noting that the properties of the plant remained the same as at home.
Today, lavender is grown on the peninsula primarily for industrial purposes on a large scale..
Even 30 years ago, plantations occupied about 2.6 thousand hectares. Today, unfortunately, this number has decreased. For some reason, most of the fields were left unattended, and the plants simply died.
Flowering season
Of course, if the person who goes to the Crimea, aims to visit the lavender fields, you need to take a very responsible approach to the choice of travel time, because lavender blooms far from a whole year. Given the fact that initially lavender is a thermophilic plant native to the Mediterranean, its flowering period is variable and depends on various factors.
For example, cold and late spring can shift the time when lavender begins to bloom. If you take something in between, then the most violent flowering period falls in mid-June - early July. It was during this period that one can observe the most magnificent floral carpet of purple in the fields of Crimea.
Of course, you can take a chance and go to lavender plantations in early August. But, most likely, the expectations will not be met. Already in early August, flowers begin to dry out under the influence of the scorching Crimean sun and lose their original bright and bewitching look. Only the smell remains, but the brightness of the color, unfortunately, is not.
Do not also forget that lavender is an industrial plant grown not so much so that tourists can enjoy it, but for use in perfumes and pharmacology. That is why farmers will not wait for the flowers to dry; they collect them at the right time.
But not all lavender fields are under strict supervision, there are so-called wild plantations that were formed naturally by the wind, which could spread the seeds of the plant in the vicinity.
