There is an opinion that it makes sense to go on vacation to European countries only in the warm season. However, winter in Montenegro can bring no less joy than June in Paris or August in Bulgaria. The main thing is to know all the subtleties and nuances of such a vacation.

Features

Winter is bad in only one way: it gets colder, and not so cozy. But such a change in weather repels most ordinary tourists. And so you can get acquainted with the architecture, history, partly and the nature of the country much better than in the hot season. These advantages fully justify the inability to lie on the beach. The Montenegrin climate is mild, and prices fall with the onset of the cold season.

In mountainous areas heavy snowfalls fall. For skiing, these are almost ideal conditions. Better only in the Alps and other recognized places. But the prices there are much higher. Winter holidays in Montenegro are becoming more pleasant thanks to the unique landscapes. It is almost impossible to tear your eyes away from the snowy mountains covered with a thick spruce, from modest houses and other beauties.

Meteorology

Winter in Montenegro is not too severe - only on a few days the air temperature drops to more than –10 degrees. More often, it ranges between –7 and +5 degrees Celsius. Sometimes on a sunny afternoon, the air can warm up to +12 degrees. Such weather in December is unattainable even in the warmest regions of Russia. But at the same time, it is also not so much different from the conditions familiar to our people.

Therefore, acclimatization does not cause any particular difficulties. In winter, near the coast, rain falls much more often than snow.But behind the mountain range, located a little further, heavy snowfalls are quite possible. Although it does not happen too often. The duration of the ski season is approximately six months.

It is hardly worth fearing a gusty, cold wind. Winter air in Montenegro is clean and fresh. It is difficult to find a more environmentally friendly place in Europe. But we must take into account the peculiarities of the conditions in certain areas. Despite the very small size of Montenegro (smaller than the Kaliningrad region), the difference between them is very significant.

In Bar, the air temperature in December warms up to +11 degrees, in January it is even warmer - up to +12. In Budva, a stable thermometer shows an average of +11 degrees. Tivat has a December air temperature of about +10, and in January - up to +11. For comparison, in Podgorica these months the temperature is +9 and +10 degrees. The coldest Montenegrin city is Plevlya (–1 and +1 degrees Celsius, respectively).

Where do skiers go?

Those who decide to go skiing should head to Durmitor. This area, located 150 km north of Podgorica, is considered one of the most beautiful places on Earth. No wonder Durmitor was given the status of a national park. The resort section of the park is located at an altitude of 1100 to 1700 m above sea level. The highest peak of Bobot Cook reaches 2500 m.

In December - April, the snow cover in Durmitor is 1.2 m. In this resort, clear zones are allocated for both beginner athletes and advanced climbers. The tracks are equipped in full compliance with international standards. The center of the Montenegro ski area is the resort of Zabljak. The city is well equipped, you can easily live in a villa or in a modest hotel.

The skiing season in Zabljak covers January - April. Right in the middle of the town there are slopes:

  • Yavorovacha;
  • Shtuots;
  • Savin Cook (there is a funicular on it).

Zabljak can offer schools of skiers and snowboarders. Carrying equipment is optional, as it is rented.

Cross-country skiing trails are available. On the left bank of Tara is Kolasin. It’s nice to see it because the city has received the nickname “Little Switzerland”.

Skiers come here every year to ride from Belasitsa mountain. Prepared ski and toboggan runs. Ski lifts are available. Note: you can easily combine active leisure in the mountains and fishing. Ride around for a day, and for dinner eat a cooked catch yourself - which could be more beautiful.

Now another ski center in Montenegro is booming - Bielasitsa-Ezerine. It is located just 9 km from Kolasin. The local slopes are so gentle that they pose no danger to the least trained people. Two main tracks may soon be replenished with new slopes ..

Excursions, walks

Excursion leisure can be combined harmoniously with the same skiing. But in Montenegro there are quite a few attractions to devote to the whole vacation to get to know them. Among them stands out Cetinje Monastery, located in the city of Cetinje.

If the inspection of temple architecture is not inspiring or does not fully satisfy, it is worth to go up on a stepped path in Negushi. Then from the top of the mountain it will be possible to explore the Boka Kotor Bay in an optimal perspective.

The population of Negushi village is positive and welcomes tourists as their friends. Having reached this place, you will certainly have to try:

  • kaymak;
  • prshut;
  • Montenegrin cheeses;
  • dishes prepared in the hearths;
  • mead (which also has a healing effect).

Some extreme people combine visiting Montenegro in winter with swimming in the waves of the Adriatic Sea. Doing this makes sense only for trained "walruses." Unaccustomed to diving in cold water, people can even suffer.

Important: at the end of December, as elsewhere, Montenegrins are intensively preparing for the New Year celebrations. At this time, you can combine the use of excursion programs and walks along the decorated streets.

The winter months in Montenegro allow travelers to improve their skills in snowmobiling, snowshoeing, SUVs and even mountain biking. You can combine business with pleasure by visiting spa centers. Rest will be more fun if you go to nightclubs. Some of them are located near hotels in ski centers. Returning to the excursion programs, it is necessary to mention the variety of cult monuments that are in almost every locality.

Among them stand out:

  • Ostrog Monastery (Niksic);
  • Madame od Skrpjela;
  • Church of St. John (Budva);
  • Church of the Resurrection and the Church of St. George (Podgorica).

What else to visit and see?

Do not think that in Montenegro there are only religious monuments. This country also boasts a considerable number of museums. So, Kotor has a cat museum and a navy museum.

Arriving to Komarno village, excursionists will see from the inside what was the house in Montenegro in the old days. They will be offered a boat ride along the mouth of the Tsrnoevich River. The city of Bar is advised to visit the palace of King Nikola. From there it's worth heading to the museum complex Old Bar.

The highlight of the museum's collection is olive, whose age is over two thousand years. When visiting Ulcinj it is advisable to first walk along the streets breathing antiquity. Further, it is advisable for travelers to go to the beach, from where boats departing around the island of Ada Boyana depart. If neither nature nor cultural attractions are already causing enthusiasm, then you can go shopping.

Although Montenegro is not considered a suitable country for shopping, it is worth visiting Podgorica, where there are the best outlets.
