A popular vacation in Montenegro is the beach of Mogren, which is located in the city of Budva, located in the central part of the country's coast. This ancient city is not only a landmark on the Adriatic coast, but also a valuable historical monument. The land of the so-called black mountains, sounding in Latin like Montenegro - all this is the beautiful country of Montenegro, which is located on the Balkan Peninsula. Holidays in the magnificent resort of the Adriatic Sea amid picturesque nature attracts many tourists from all over the world.
Fairytale paradise
Budva itself is a unique place to relax. Many attractions preserve many years of historical heritage, which you should definitely familiarize yourself with. Old Town, embankment, Citadel, museums, Slavic Boulevard, Top Hill night club, water park, old library and many other places, allow you to immerse yourself in the Budva spa life.
Heading to the resort of Mogren, you can not ignore Budva Old Town which contains many historical monuments of Venetian architecture of the Mediterranean. The old city was founded in the 15th century and was located on a coastal spit that goes into the sea. The historic city center is surrounded on all sides by strong walls made of solid stone. Today it is a real open-air museum, behind the walls of which many artifacts are preserved, their search continues at the present time.
Old Budva with its narrow streets and houses of red tiles on the roofs, annually receives guests of any nationality.
The hospitable city provides an opportunity for everyone to visit the magnificent Adriatic coast - Mogren. Mogren Beach consists of two bays Mogren I and Mogren II, located in the northern part of the city and separated by a cliff. This place is the most romantic and main attraction of Budva. It is located on the southeastern part of the coast, 2 kilometers from the Old Town, among multilayer cliffs, ancient buildings and stunning panoramas.
The landscapes of Mogren are very beautiful, the road leading to them is especially impressive. On the left, sea waves beat against a small cliff, and on the right, steep cliffs hang. In order to approach the coastal zone, it is necessary to go along a narrow path through a small grotto. Throughout the journey, the beautiful landscapes of the Old Town and the island of St. Nicholas open to the eye.
A popular object for excursions is uninhabited island of St. Nicholas (the local name is “Hawaii” or “Shkol”) is located 1 km from Old Budva and is perfectly visible from the coast of Mogren beaches. The total length of the island is 840 m, these include 3 large sandy beaches and many small ones located around, which can only be reached by boat.
The water in the coastal zone of Budva is very warm and clean, through it you can see the pebble-sandy bottom. For this feature, in 2004 Mogren Beach was marked with the “Blue Flag”. Mogren Beach has a special place among the objects of the Budva Riviera - it is protected by a mountain range from the bustle of the city. Spectacular landscapes, azure water and the warm sandy shore will not leave anyone indifferent.
Montenegrin legislation allows only 50% of the coastal zone to be occupied by sun loungers, which makes it possible for people to sit comfortably on the sand or their own rugs without paying for the rental of a sunbed.
Name history
The resort Mogren owes its name to the Spanish navigator Mogrini, who was shipwrecked near these places and was cast ashore on this beach. Also, according to local legends, a church named after the Roman Catholic Blessed Anthony of Padua was built by the same sailor on the seashore.
Unfortunately, it has not survived to our time, since after the Second World War it was demolished by the communist authorities. Today, a cozy cafe is located on the site of the church.
Way to the beach
The most convenient way to get to Mogren beach is on foot, since by car you can only get closer to Budva on highway No. 2 via Obilaznica.
You can get to the beach on foot by two paths:
- along the sea surface leading from the Old Town - this is a road for tourists;
- from the old fort Mogren - this is a road for extreme travelers.
The path to the beach begins in the north of Old Budva Square. The square has an entrance gate, behind which begins a narrow path for pedestrians. This trail offers a magnificent view of the Old Town and the beach of Richard's head, named after actor Richard Widmark, who played a major role in the film, shot on this section of the Budva coast in 1963.
Walking along steep cliffs, you can see Monument to a sophisticated ballerina or gymnast. However, no one knows the exact name of this statue and its history. One thing is for sure - this is an image of love, faith, hope and a symbol of Budva. Going around powerful stone cliffs, the road enters the first bay, where Old Budva looks great from this angle. There is also Mogren I.
On the narrow path leading to the tunnel, you can go inside the cliff and go to the next beach - Mogren II. The path to the second beach is very narrow, and sometimes slippery and flooded with water. Moving along it, you should be careful and careful. From the far side of the coast of Mogren II begins the path to the rocks - it is more complex and dangerous.
The total length of the beaches is 400 m, the entrance to the territory is free, only rent of a sunbed is paid. On the beach there is all the necessary infrastructure for a comfortable pastime. Comparing the beaches of Mogren I and Mogren II, it can be noted that the first beach is much more equipped for a tourist or family vacation with children. There are cafeterias, fresh showers, toilets, changing rooms. The coast here is more even, sand and gravel. Boat and catamaran rental services are also available on the beach.
Mogren II Beach has a more rocky shore. Due to the difficult road, less often you can see vacationers with children and less comfortable conditions for relaxation than on the neighboring beach. The coastal zone of Mogren II is strewn with coarse sand and pebbles, and in the far part there is a rocky path to a steep rock. You should move in this direction in comfortable shoes and use maximum caution.
Having overcome the obstacles of stones and finding yourself on top of a cliff, you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Old Budva and sheer cliffs. From this point, the so-called secret path originates, leading to the ancient Mogren fortress, built in 1860 at the direction of the Austro-Hungarian authorities.
