Before going on a trip, tourists want to know everything about the city to which they decided to go. Niksic is the second most populated point of Montenegro. The city stands in the north-west of the country by the Zeta River. It rises above sea level by 650 meters and is surrounded by colorful lakes: Liverovichi, Slano, Krupets.

History of the city

The Roman military camp of Anderba, which stood in the IV century at the junction of important roads, initiated Niksic. Later, already in the V century, the fortress Anagastum was erected on the site of the camp. The Slavs, who came to these places later, renamed the city to Onogst. After the Ottoman Empire conquered Serbian lands, Niksic received the status of a large Turkish fortress. When Nicola I Petrovich Negosh was at the head of Montenegro, the Turks were expelled, the city was freed, and began to attract new settlers. At this time, he began to bear a modern name.

In 1883, the architect Josip Slade wrote a plan for the development of the city, which was dynamically implemented in the next thirty years: trade, production, culture and education were actively developing. By 1900, the main attractions of Niksic were erected, the main square, and several parks were laid out. World War II pretty much battered the city, but it was reconstructed.

Over time, the population of Niksic grew three times, and he became one of the key production centers of Montenegro.
