Among the Balkan countries, Montenegro is characterized by comfortable conditions and the benevolence of the local population for tourists from Russia. But when traveling there, it is very important to study the features of each resort. This must be done before sending to Herceg Novi.
Description
In popular sources, the city of Herceg Novi is compared with the botanical garden of Montenegro. Such an association is absolutely correct. It is difficult to find other places where there would be as many heterogeneous plants, especially flowers and fruits. In the past, sailors who went on long journeys brought back a variety of representatives of the flora. This is what turned Herceg Novi into a truly stunning natural site.
Attention: with all the beauty of these places, you don’t have to rely on excursions in Montenegro. The city is too far from mass tourist routes. And a beach holiday here is not as attractive as in Budva.
Connoisseurs are advised to take a whole day to get acquainted with Herceg Novi, because there are really many attractions here.
A city, like Rome or Moscow, stands on the hills. This circumstance helped its builders create a unique ensemble of multilevel fortified walls, stairs and passages. Despite the common belief that there are no good beaches at all, some sections of the coast are quite pleasant. It is primarily about Zhanitsa. A strong confirmation of its merits is that in the past the Yugoslav presidents used to come there on vacation.
As for the payment for products and souvenirs, then Herceg Novi is perhaps the best option throughout Montenegro. The city was founded in 1382 and at first it was called Sveti Stefan (or San Stefano).
Note: you should not confuse it with the modern resort of St. Stephen, which occupies an island in the vicinity of Budva.
Herceg Novi stands out even among other Montenegrin resorts with peace and quiet. There is a very low crime rate, and if you do not provoke local residents, especially leaving things unattended, then there is almost no danger.
sights
Among the monuments of Herceg Novi, tourists are advised to inspect primarily the clock tower. She has a variety of names:
- Sat Kula;
- Sugar Kula;
- Torah.
The tower was built during the period of Italian rule. However, later after the capture of the city by the Turks, a mosque was made from it. A characteristic feature of the turret is the bas-relief "Black Madonna", in the manufacture of which used burnt wood. It is curious that the construction of the tower dates back to 1494, but the clock was put on it only in 1753. In addition to the decorative function, this building was both a guard post and a fire tower.
In the evening hours on Sat Kula include beautiful lighting. You can watch it from the nearby restaurants, where a lot of people are going.
Among the attractions of the center of Herceg Novi should be called the Karacha Fountain. It was built during the time of Turkish rule. It is noteworthy that the water from the jets of this fountain is suitable for drinking. Bellavista Square (aka Duke Stefan), where Karacha is located, is also occupied by the large cathedral of Archangel Michael.
Outwardly, the old view of the temple is deceptive - it was built only in 1900. Around the cathedral are green palm trees. The resulting ensemble looks very nice against the background of the surrounding architecture.
According to some people, the main historical monument of Herceg Novi is the Bloody Tower (aka Kanli Kula). This is the name of the ancient fortress (and part-time former prison, from which there never were escapes). Montenegrins sometimes try to hold weddings here.
Important: those who come to this city by sea will have to get to the historical part by stairs.
Then only they can:
- enjoy the view of unusual monuments;
- to visit the museum of local history;
- taste dishes in restaurants with ancient cuisine;
- pick up authentic souvenirs.
Close to the historical center adjoins the square of Nikola Dzhurkovich. It itself is relatively small, but there are many restaurants and shops.
Note: if you find yourself in Herceg Novi in January, you should definitely visit this square. They hold a mimosa festival, which is very much appreciated by the Montenegrins.
Continuing to explore the city, it is advisable to look to the church of St. Jerome. Her fate is unusual: there are many Christian churches that later became mosques, and this is just the opposite. Moreover, the first church building was lost due to a landslide. A modern building was erected in the same place in 1856. She was made as beautiful and roomy as possible to mitigate the bitterness of loss.
To the right of the Church of St. Jerome is the tower of the same name, which contains many ancient documents and material monuments of the past.
Of the sights of Herceg Novi it is definitely worth mentioning and monument dedicated to those who participated in the wars on the Adriatic. It is curious that the monument was dedicated not only to the Montenegrin, but also to the Russian sailors who defended the Boka Kotor Bay from the French at the beginning of the 19th century. And the fortress Forte Mare was built in the last years of the XIV century. She was called to stop the raids of the Turkish fleet, which sharply intensified then. The modern name of the citadel was given by the Venetians, who controlled it in the 17th century.
The entrance to the fortress is paid 2 euros. Without any fee, you can visit the Orthodox monastery of Savina, which got its name in the glory of the initiator of the building - St. Savva. The complex of structures, in addition to three churches and a building with cells, also includes a cemetery. You can get to the monastery on foot.You only need to spend 20 minutes walking in the direction of Kotor.
Without leaving Herceg Novi, you will be able to partially explore its beautiful promenade, which stretches for 7 km. The street connects the Igalo wellness center and the Méline village, located in the vicinity of the resort. More precisely - 3 km outside the city limits. You won’t be bored on the embankment - there are:
- access to the beaches;
- souvenir shops;
- bars
- restaurants
- shops;
- hotels.

But even in the cold season, the air cools on average to + 11 ° C, and water to + 14 ° C degrees. The most rational time for traveling to this city is from July to September inclusive.

When the bus moves along the road along the bay, it offers unusually beautiful views. However, there is nothing to think about taking pictures due to strong shaking.
Usually the bus has to sit for about two hours. But the flight going through the Kamenari crossing arrives noticeably faster. Buses from and to Tivat, Podgorica, Kotor systematically depart to Herceg Novi. For trips from both airports of Montenegro, it is advisable to book a taxi in advance.

Reviews
Judging by the estimates of some people, it is necessary to go to Herceg Novi at the very beginning of acquaintance with Montenegro. If you go there near the end of the trip, the severity of impressions becomes dull, and the city will not produce the desired effect. Of course, the old part of the building is of most interest. It is very pleasant and unusual to walk along narrow streets paved with stone and limited by stone barriers.
Those who have been here recommend to remember that a cool morning is quickly replaced by a sultry day - you just need to consider this when choosing clothes for a walk.
Tourists note that everything is beautiful, neat and pretty in Herceg Novi. But for beach activities, this city is definitely not worth choosing. Not that the local coast is too bad, there are simply better places for the same price. But the local flavor is felt in everything and can even amaze those who were not impressed by Budva, Perast and Kotor. According to some commentators, a strange feeling is created - it seems to be the same Montenegro as in other places, but something is elusively different.
Other tourists indicate that this is indeed a solid city that allows you to relax in Europe. Some vacationers directly write that everywhere they found some flaws, but when traveling to Herceg Novi, they were completely satisfied. It should be noted that the abundance of greenery and mountains is reflected in almost all reviews. And it’s easy to find hotels with excellent views of the surrounding beauty.
Summing up, we can say - Herceg Novi will be an excellent platform for those who want to get acquainted with old Europe and pristine landscapes inexpensively.
