Severe manners demanded harsh dogs. Old fighting dogs, bred in England to participate in dog fights or to persecute bulls or bears, bull-and-terriers had powerful grip, tenacity, dexterity and speed. But with the ban on cruel entertainment at the end of the 19th century, the demand for such aggressive dogs fell, people were interested in other qualities of the breed, such as loyalty, trust in the person.
