Medium length hair is considered one of the most successful options for styling, including for creating curls. At such a length, you can safely experiment with various types of curls. Read more about how to choose a curler and use it correctly in the article.
Which is better to choose?
Almost any type of curler can be used on medium length hair. Depending on the chosen instrument, you can get more voluminous or smaller curls, soft waves or elastic afro-curls.
Quite common for medium length hair are Velcro curlers. They got their name thanks to the fleecy surface. The latter is soft hooks that cling to the hair and prevent the curlers from sliding off. Another name is hedgehogs.
Velcro sticks come in various diameters, so you can use them to create both a basal volume (the largest diameter of curlers) and medium sized curls. Velcro has a mesh surface, so the hair dries quickly, the material does not heat up, therefore You can dry the wound strands with a hairdryer. Finally, the products are easy to maintain and have an affordable cost.
However, Velcro is not suitable for too thick hair - in such a hair they will provoke tangling. The best option is such curlers for dry, weakened and split ends.
A modern way to quickly get curls is to use a hair curler. A similar tool was used by women in the Soviet period. Curlers were rag or foam rollers that were heated in hot water, after which strands were quickly wound on them.By the time the curlers cooled, the hair was twisted into curls.
Today, such products are practically not used, since it is a long time, there is a risk of getting burned. Modern counterparts are heated in the microwave or oven. Although this is not the most comfortable option in operation.
The current version of thermal hair curlers is electric hair curlers. They are sold in a special container that connects to the mains. Curlers are placed inside the container, which heat up for 4-6 minutes, while they are equipped with an insulating circuit, which significantly reduces the risk of burns. Such devices cause less damage to hair than Soviet counterparts.
They act on the principle of curling with the only difference that in the electric curler the strands do not directly contact the hottest part, as happens when using curling irons.
At the same time, thermal hair curlers still negatively affect the structure of the hair, therefore Doing hairstyles with their use is not recommended more often than once a week. With special care, they should be wound to owners of bleached, dry and weakened hair. When choosing an electric curler, you should give preference tothat have a teflon or ceramic coating, since metal cause more damage to hair.
If you want to become the owner of elastic small curls by the type of perm or afro-curls, you should pay attention to wooden bobbins. Externally, they are sticks in the form of spirals, have rubber bands for fixing.
It is very difficult to wind bobbins on your own, it is impossible to sleep on them and even just walking is not too pleasant - the skin is too tight. But laying after using bobbins lasts up to several days.
A soft version of bobbins - spirals. These are fabric curlers that are twisted into a spiral. To wrap the strands and fix them, the products are equipped with a special hook. Like bobbins, they help to obtain elastic curls, but are not suitable for heavy thick hair.
Foam Curlers usually are soft rollers with rubber bands. They are easy to use, convenient (you can even sleep) and have a low cost. Such tools allow you to get soft natural waves. The product can have a different diameter - from 2 cm (for small curls) and up to 3.5-4 cm (for large).
Another variety of soft curlers - boomerangs. Inside such products there is a wire rod (due to this, such curlers are flexible), on top is foam rubber (a less durable version) or a rubberized surface. Boomerangs have the appearance of soft sticks around which a strand is wound. The curlers themselves are bent and fixed in this way. \
The products are convenient to use, do not heat up when drying with a hairdryer, they do not need clamps (which often cause the appearance of creases on the curls) are available in price. However, styling is not always obtained the first time, a certain skill is needed. In addition, often in places of bends the wire breaks, which makes the further use of boomerangs impossible.
For medium-length hair, velvet curlers are also suitable. It is with such professionals who prefer to work. Such "cylinders" will allow you to get a luxurious Hollywood styling at home.
Externally, velvet curlers are perforated rollers, externally covered with velor or velvety fabric. A special clamp is used for fixing. Due to the soft surface, such curlers do not injure hair.
How to use?
The wrapping of different types of curlers may have some differences. But first, check out the general guidelines for creating curly styling.
Wind on curlers should only clean hair. When you try to make curls on stale hair, you will get greasy curls that will not last long.
So, the first step should be washing and drying hair. You should not wind wet hair, as this breaks them, and the curls will dry for too long.
Before wrapping hair in curlers, you need to carefully comb the hair and divide it into 4 zones - the occipital, frontal and 2 lateral. They begin to twist the curlers from the back of the head. Then go to the front, and after - to the side. Before wrapping each strand, it is recommended to moisten a little. It is convenient to do this from a spray gun.
Take the curlers in your hands, put the tip of the hair in the middle of the roller and begin to twist the strand inward. The width of the strand is slightly less than the width of the roller. Remove the rollers after the hair has completely dried, it usually takes 1-2 hours. If you use a hairdryer, the process will be faster.
If electric curlers are used, then the hair should be perfectly dry. Before wrapping, you should spray a heat-protective spray on it and allow it to completely absorb. The curlers are heated and quickly, until they have cooled, twist strands on them. The process takes place on the same principle as when using Velcro. To hold the rollers on the hair, use the clips that go in the kit - clamps, crabs. Thermal curlers are removed after they have cooled, as a rule - after 20-30 minutes.
If these varieties of curlers wind up, placing them horizontally (that is, the roller is laid horizontally), then when using whooping cough, they should be wound vertically (that is, “sticks” look down).
It is necessary to divide the hair into several working zones, the wound strands should be 2 times thinner than the diameter of the bobbin. You can arrange the latter in a checkerboard pattern, parting or heading from the nape to the crown. In any case, the bobbins should be placed tightly and evenly, but you do not need to tighten the hair strongly - this spoils the hair. The bobbin strands dry longer than others - up to 3-5 hours.
If foam rubber curlers are used, then you can dry your hair or moisturize it from a spray bottle. You need to wind the locks from the bangs zone. Then they descend from the bangs to the back of the head. After they move to the side zones, it is better to wind the curlers in rows. That is, in the lateral zones, highlight the “line” from the face to the back of the head along which the wrap is done. Last of all, work with temporal strands. Curlers are removed starting from the back of the head. Similarly, boomerangs are wound.
If you decide to curl your hair at night, put on a special mesh on your head or tie a scarf. This will prevent the rolling of papillots and the unfolding of the lock. Otherwise, it will turn out not too beautiful.
Velvet curlers screw in the same way as Velcro, however, special clamps are used for fixing.
When using spirals (fabric curlers), you must first put the spiral on the hook, and then pick up the strand through the hole in the hook and pull it inside the spiral. Creating such a hairstyle involves a certain knack, it is important to pay attention to the direction of the spiral.
How to keep styling for a long time?
The use of styling products will help to keep styling for a long time. Before wrapping curlers on the locks, you need to apply a small amount of mousse or foam. You can do this immediately for the entire mass of hair or for each strand immediately before wrapping.
Do not take a large amount of the product and apply it to the roots. Otherwise, you get the effect of sebaceous hair.
After the curlers are removed, do not use a comb. It will destroy the structure of curls. It is better to disassemble the curls with your hands, and after that - sprinkle with varnish. Spray varnish on strands from below, and not spray from above - this will compress the hair, and the hair in the lower part will develop.
If you need additional volume, you can tilt your head down and in this position treat the curls with varnish. Spray it from below, as if from the ends of the hair.
It is important to understand that the better the strands on the curlers have dried, the longer they will retain their shape. For this reason, you do not need to wet your hair too much with water and wind up thick locks. To facilitate wrapping, it is also recommended to use air conditioning after washing your hair. This will make the hair obedient.
Finally, it is important to remember that different types of hair hold curls in different ways. Best of all - painted and discolored. Almost any hair curler is suitable for such a head of hair, only Velcro (can be confused) and thermal hair curlers (even more dried) should be used with caution.
For thick and heavy hair, you can recommend bobbins, foam and velvet products, as well as (for rare use) - hair rollers. And you should also choose suitable styling products - strong fixation.
